The summer is finally upon us!

That means longer days, warmer temperatures and bored kids. It can be tough at times to think of ways to keep them busy during the summer, so I’ve come up with 13 fun activities that I think will do just the trick.

1) Visit Your Local Pool Or Splash Pad

Now that most kids are out of school for the summer, community pools and splash pads are open for business. What better way to beat the heat than an afternoon spent playing in the water?

2) Make Homemade Popsicles

There are so many awesome recipes out there and they’re so easy to make! The other day my kids and I made these Berry Parfait Yogurt Popsicles from Well Plated and OMG! They were amazing! They are the perfect summer treat.  The kids had so much fun making them and I was happy because they were made with healthy ingredients, unlike those store bought popsicles that are packed with sugar.  We like to use these popsicle molds as well as these BPA free silicone ice pop molds. Please go make these right now! I’m telling you, you need these popsicles in your life.

3) Go To The Movies

On those super hot summer days, why not take the kids to a nice air conditioned movie theatre. Many local theatres have cheap days or classic movies at a special rate.

4) Go On An Outdoor Scavenger Hunt

Pack up the kids and take them to the local park for a fun colour scavenger hunt. My kids love scavenger hunts and it’s a great way to get them out there in nature this summer. We love this Colour Scavenger Hunt from I Heart Crafty Things. The kids had so much fun trying to find items that matched all of the colours in the rainbow.

5) Blow Bubbles

What kid doesn’t love making gigantic bubbles? We love this Big Bubbles Wand and Mix. It make the biggest bubbles ever! We also love this No Spill Bubble Bucket. My kids are constantly picking up the bucket and moving it around which causes the solution to spill all over the place. It’s great for keeping the mess inside the bucket and not all over them.

6) Go To The Drive-In

There is nothing I love more than going to the drive-in on hot summer nights. I have some of the best memories of going with my family as a kid. We’d all get in our pj’s and pack the car with blankets, pillows and snacks. It was always so much fun.

7) Star Gaze In Your Back Yard

Let the kids stay up late this summer and go out to the backyard to gaze at the stars. Get out the inflatable kiddie pool and fill it with blankets and pillows just like Michelle from Crafty Morning did. What a great way to get some extra bonding time with your kids! We like this inflatable pool. It’s the perfect size for the whole family.

8) Go For A Picnic

Pack a yummy lunch and take the kids to a local park for a picnic. Spend the afternoon eating, playing at the play ground and reading some of your favourite books. Better yet, bring some fun outdoor activities and make a whole day out of it. My kids love when we bring this outdoor play set on our picnics. We also use this picnic basket and this blanket.

9) Make S’mores

S’mores have always been my favourite summer time treat. They’re warm, They’re gooey and they’re chocolatey. What’s not to love?! I especially love when there made over a camp fire. If you don’t have access to a campfire, you can try making them in the oven or on the BBQ using this S’mores Maker.

10) Sidewalk Chalk

My kids love sidewalk chalk! We find that Crayola makes the best chalk and has the most vibrant colours. The kids love to colour picture, play hopscotch and draw with stencils. It’s great because afterwards, you can just hose down the driveway and voila, the mess is gone! We also just recently tried out the Crayola Chalk Paint, which was really fun too. It’s a bit messier, but hey, you can always hose down the kids too!

11) Squirt Gun Painting

The kids absolutely loved this activity!  It’s so easy to setup with minimal cleanup too. All you need is a couple of cheap squirt guns, paint and paper and you have yourself a few hours of ‘me time’. Check out this post from Fireflies and Mud Pies to find out how to set it up.

12) Have A Water Balloon Fight

Stay cool this summer and keep the kids outside with a good old fashion water balloon fight. What better way to add a little bit of fun and excitement to your days. Join in and you’ll be feeling like a kid in no time (while getting some exercise in there too). Save some time by blowing up those balloons using this water balloon filler. Also, try using this 3 person sling shot for some extra fun!

13) Start a Garden

Whether it be in your garden in the backyard or just a little pot on your back porch, kids love gardening. Last summer, we grew strawberries and cucumbers and the kids loved having something to be responsible for. Everyday they would ask to go outside and water their plants. They loved to see how big the plants were getting daily and they absolutely loved the fact that they were able to eat what they grew themselves. We also did a few experiments from this book, which were so much fun. They loved using these kids gardening tools, which can be used as sand toys.

Check out this post for ways to keep little kids busy.

These are awesome ideas! I might wait until it’s a little warmer to do the squirt gun painting, that’s my favourite idea, but I think we could do the colour coded scavenger hunt now – will give it a try this weekend! Thank you! 🙂

Oh how I love this list. I see some popsicles and star gazing in our near future-we have already been talking about a late night to let the kids see all the fire flies by our house…I love the idea of the bed in the pool-we have one just like the photo. Thanks for sharing. And I’m sure our kids will also be thankful 😉

Is summer here already? Hard to believe. Great tips on summer activities for kids. Love the outdoor scavenger hunt idea! Since I live in the Caribbean, going to the beach is a MUST! The kids love beach combing and walking along the shore collecting shells. I make it a competition for the most beautiful shells. 🙂
